Did You Know?
1. Gorge-Tillicum is an urban, residential, and historical neighbourhood in the western part of the District of Saanich, just north of the City of Victoria, Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Saanich is named after the Saanich or W̱SÁNEĆ peoples, the area's indigenous inhabitants, and means "emerging" in SENĆOŦEN, a Salish dialect.
2. The Gorge-Tillicum neighbourhood overlooks the Gorge Waterway, a narrow tidal inlet connecting Victoria Harbour to Portage Inlet. "The Gorge" was historically an important First Nations spiritual place and food-gathering area, and a recreation spot for early Victoria residents and visitors. Victoria’s first swimming school was built on The Gorge in 1900, and the waterway remains popular for recreational boating. Attractions include the restored heritage Brookman's Grocery, and scenic Gorge Waterway Park.
3. The London Drugs in Tillicum Centre on Tillicum Road, between Burnside Road West and Arena Road, has been part of the Gorge-Tillicum neighbourhood and Saanich community since 1999.
"There are so many community events that include all who live here. Mission is growing, with newcomers arriving from all over to enjoy the beauty of the area as well as the many activities available — swimming, hiking, horseback riding, fishing. I am a Rotarian here in Mission, and see firsthand all the support given to all age and ethnic groups, and all those who need care and attention. Although I do not live here, I do feel like I belong."
