1. Incorporated as a city in 1977, the City of St. Albert in northern Alberta is just northwest of the City of Edmonton, along the Sturgeon River. St. Albert was originally separated from Edmonton by several miles of farmland, but the 1980s expansion of Edmonton's city limits placed St. Albert immediately adjacent. St. Albert is now the second largest city in the Edmonton Metropolitan Region.
2. St. Albert was founded in 1861 as a Métis settlement by Father Albert Lacombe, OMI. The settlement was named by Bishop Alexandre-Antonin Taché, OMI after Lacombe's name saint, Saint Albert of Louvain. Originally established at Lac Ste. Anne, the settlement was moved to its present location in search of more fertile farmland, and for easier access to supplies from Fort Edmonton. In honour of its multicultural history, many of St. Albert's downtown street signs are trilingual in French, Cree, and English. A small chapel built by Father Lacombe still stands today, on Mission Hill.
