1. Incorporated in 1874, the City of Nanaimo is a municipality on the east coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, and the site of the main BC Ferries terminal linking northern Vancouver Island with the Lower Mainland. One of the province's oldest municipalities, the city is named after the Snuneymuxw or snʊˈneɪməxʷ First Nations, the area's indigenous peoples.

European settlement began with a Hudson's Bay Company trading post in the early 19th century, and the community grew with the establishment of coal mining in the area after 1849. Built in 1853, The Bastion, a historical octagonal fortification on Front Street, remains a popular tourist attraction.
