Did You Know?
1. Incorporated as a city in 1958, the City of Grande Prairie in Peace River Country, northwest Alberta is strategically situated at the intersection of Highway 43 and Highway 40 (the Bighorn Highway), northwest of the City of Edmonton. Named for the large prairie which surrounds it, Grande Pairie adopted the trumpeter swan as an official symbol due to its proximity to the bird's migration route and summer nesting grounds, and is also known as "Swan City."
2. Peace River Country was occupied by the indigenous Dane-zaa people before permanent European settlement. In 1880, a Hudson's Bay Company trading post called La Grande Prairie was established by George Kennedy just northwest of the present city. Today, the city remains an economic and transportation hub and is on the CANAMEX trade route linking Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Grande Prairie hosts the annual Grande Prairie Stompede, and also hosted the 1995 Canada Games and the 2010 Arctic Winter Games.
