1. Sherwood Park is a large hamlet in Strathcona County, Alberta, just east of the City of Edmonton. It is situated near major highways--east of Highway 216 (Anthony Henday Drive), south of Highway 16 (Yellowhead Trail), west of Highway 21, and north of Highway 630 (Wye Road). Sherwood Park has a population large enough to be Alberta's seventh largest city, yet is officially designated a hamlet. It is an urban centre surrounded by a large rural area that together are governed by one municipality, that being Strathcona County (considered a "specialized municipality" in Alberta).
2. Started up as a satellite community in 1955 as "Campbelltown" by developers John Hook Campbell and John Mitchell, the name was changed to Sherwood Park in 1956 after it was discovered other communities in Canada and abroad carried a similar name. Strathcona County boasts many sports and recreational amenities (i.e. Millennium Place, Broadmoor Lake Park and the Strathcona Wilderness Centre) and attractions (i.e. the Birkebeiner Nordic ski race. Strathcona County is also proud of its connection to the UNESCO Beaver Hills Biosphere.
