Did You Know?
1. Incorporated in 1906, the District of Saanich just north of the City of Victoria is the largest municipality in Greater Victoria, Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The district is named after the Saanich or W̱SÁNEĆ peoples, the area's indigenous inhabitants. Saanich means "emerging" in SENĆOŦEN, a Salish dialect, and historically refers to the sight of Mt. Newton "rising" as the flood waters receded.
2. Built in the 1850s, the Craigflower Schoolhouse in Saanich is a National Historic Site of Canada, and is the oldest surviving school building in Western Canada. Saanich's Dominion Astrophysical Observatory was also briefly home to the world's largest reflecting telescope, built in 1918, and Cadboro Bay still boasts occasional sightings of "Cadborosaurus," a mythical sea serpent in indigenous folklore.
3. The London Drugs in Saanich Centre on the corner of Quadra Street and McKenzie Avenue, has been part of the Saanich community since 1980
"We enjoy the unique diversity in the store and community, which offers a great sense of inclusion to all races, cultures and age groups. There is a vibrant mix of students that attend the nearby colleges, and we also have a large population of baby boomers and seniors that take advantage of various clubs and outdoor recreational opportunities within Saanich."
