Noise-Cancelling Headphones vs. Noise-Isolating Headphones

Two types of headphones help you reduce or eliminate noise while in use: noise-cancelling headphones and noise-isolating headphones. Noise-cancelling headphones use a technology called active noise control or digital signal processing that eliminates sound waves, thus blocking noise from penetrating the headphones. Additionally, many noise-cancelling headphones rely on soundproofing, which blocks pitches of noise that the other technology may not.

By comparison, noise-isolating headphones use physical barriers to prevent the penetration of sound. This type of headphone relies on the seal between the headphones or earbuds and the ear. Although they can reduce or muffle many noises, some sounds may still bleed through.

Types of Noise-Cancelling Headphones

Noise-cancelling headphones are available in several different fits, including over-the-ear, on-ear models and earbuds, each with their own advantages.

  • Earbuds: Earbuds are easy to store and travel with and can be a great fit when you’re running or exercising. Noise-cancelling earbuds can cancel many sounds, depending on how closely they fit within the ear canal and whether sound can bypass them if additional room surrounds the earbuds.
  • On-ear Headphones: A comfortable headphone, this fit blocks as much noise as possible but still carries the risk of letting some sounds through if they don’t cover the entire ear.
  • Over-ear Headphones: Over-ear headphones, which are bulkier than other options, block a maximum amount of noise. In conjunction with noise-cancelling technology, they form a physical block around the ear without leaving any space for sound to penetrate.
