Celebrate Coffee

Calling all coffee lovers — and those who’d love to be! Celebrate All Things Coffee here with us at London Drugs as we count down to September 29th, 2019, National Coffee Day in Canada. How ever you like your cup, London Drugs has everything you need to prepare (and enjoy!) the perfect coffee beverage, right from your own home. Take a look!

Coffee Beans, Ground and Pods

It all starts with the roasted bean. Whether you buy your coffee pre-ground or whole, iced or instant, or in single-serve pods — we have the right coffee for any preparation method or machine.

French Press

French Press

The French Press is the simplest of all the coffee brewing methods. In the carafe, steep coarsely-ground beans in hot water that’s just off the boil, for only four minutes — at the right water temperature (92–96°C), that’s how long it takes for the beans’ essential oils to develop a full flavour. Then, a steady, easy press on the plunger locks the coffee grounds at the bottom of the carafe, stopping the brewing process.

Pour Over

Pour Over

Pour Over coffee brewing systems use either a paper filter, or a very fine stainless-steel mesh filter. A paper filter produces a cleaner, lighter-flavoured brew; a steel mesh filter, a fuller, bolder-flavoured cup (also great for the environment — no paper waste!). Use coarse-ground coffee beans for the Pour Over method.

Cold Brew

Cold Brew

The Cold Brew method steeps coffee grounds in room temperature or cold water, using either a cold brew steeper, or a French Press. Steep the grounds for 12 – 24 hours on your kitchen counter or in your fridge, to get a deliciously full flavoured-brew with a smoother, less acidic taste than heat-brewed coffee. Bonus: Cold brew is more caffeinated than regular coffee, because of the longer steep time!

Coffee Grinders

Coffee Grinder

Do you buy bags of whole coffee beans, and “grind as you go”? Blade grinders have strong, durable, stainless-steel cutting blades that grind beans from coarse to fine, quickly and efficiently. Burr grinders crush beans between stainless steel conical burrs, rather than slicing them, which can be better at preserving the beans’ flavor and aroma.

Espresso Machines

Espresso Machine

Home espresso machines are more compact versions of the industrial-sized machines in coffee shops and restaurants. There are two types you can get for the home — steam-driven machines that brew one carafe of lighter-flavoured espresso at a time, or pump-driven machines that produce multiple single cups of fuller-bodied espresso on demand. Pump-driven machines also have many handy programmable or automatic functions, such as adjustable coffee strengths, multiple cup sizes and automatic frothers — which can be a great investment in terms of brewing quality and convenience!

Machine Maintenance & Cleaning

Machine Maintenance

Clean your coffee maker regularly to keep it working great, and consistently producing the best quality coffee brew! Rinse your permanent coffee filters and holders with water after each use, and remove more stubborn mineral deposits every 2 – 3 months with a decalcifier (check the manual for specific product suggestions and directions). Clean the espresso machine “steamwand” or milk frothing attachment after every use by purging milk from the wand and wiping with a damp cloth. Whatever type of coffee maker you have, there are many ways to give it a good clean at home, with supplies you most likely already have in your kitchen.
