Baby Wipes Features and How to Choose Between Them

When buying something that's going to touch your baby's skin, it's especially important to seek out the product that will work best for them. Here are a few factors to consider when buying baby wipes.

One of the first ingredients used in baby wipes is often purified water. Other ingredients may include preservatives that allow the other ingredients in the wipes to maintain their cleaning and protective properties. Some varieties also carry the classification of being hypoallergenic, which is important for families whose children have allergies or sensitive skin.

Scented vs. Unscented

Nobody loves the scent of dirty diapers or the mess baby wipes clean up, making scented wipes popular. However, babies with sensitive skin, allergies or immunity issues may react to the ingredients used to scent the wipes. Many parents choose to use unscented wipes when babies are still very young, then begin experimenting with scented wipes on older children who may be less likely to react to those scents.

Thickness and Size

A natural inclination may be to buy bigger and thicker wipes to help with especially messy situations. However, these types of wipes often come in bigger containers that contain less product than containers of thinner wipes. That can be a factor when fitting wipes into baby bags as well as warmers.

Container Types

Baby wipes are available in soft-sided, easy-to-manipulate containers as well as hard-sided containers. Soft-sided containers are easier to store in places that may require flexibility. However, their closing systems many not remain shut as securely as the snap-closures on hard-sided containers. Hard-sided containers may be best for home use because they may take up too much room in baby bags.

Biodegradable Wipes

Parents use thousands of baby wipes throughout their children’s youngest years. That means thousands of wipes discarded in the trash over that time. Some wipes are formulated to be biodegradable, which can be a more environmentally friendly option.
