School Allergy Program

School Allergy Program

Severe allergies in children present a challenge to both parents and schools/preschools. Furthermore, the number of children with severe allergies to peanuts, milk products, fish, soy, wheat, eggs and other foods appears to be escalating. Due to increasing apprehension from both parents and teachers, schools are now required to incorporate allergy education into their curriculum.

Fortunately, even the most extreme form of allergic reaction anaphylaxis—is manageable, with appropriate education for staff, parents and the children themselves.

To better educate those who must act when a child has an allergic reaction, London Drugs Patient Care Pharmacists have developed a 45-minute interactive presentation for schools. The DVD presentation identifies the major food allergies and how to recognize and prevent them, and what a child should do if he thinks he (or a classmate) is having an allergic reaction, including allergic shock. Little participants will be given a cool “Allergy Buddy” silicone bracelet which may later be shown at the pharmacy at their local London Drugs, to receive an activity/comic book about allergies.

If you are an educator and you would like to book the London Drugs School Allergy Program, please email Shan Khoo at skhoo@londondrugs.com.

Anaphylaxis, the medical term for “allergic shock” can be rapid and deadly. It can develop within seconds of exposure, beginning with itching, hives, or swelling of the lips or face. Within moments, the throat may begin to close, choking off breathing and leading to death.
