The workplace can be very stressful. Despite the best intentions, meetings, staffing issues and the feeling of constant pressure can quickly bring on that anxious feeling. Here are a few pointers on preventing and relieving anxiety during your working hours.
- Pack yourself a “stress kit” consisting of a stress-reducing lavender aromatherapy product, soothing chamomile tea and perhaps some cozy “comfort” socks to secretly slip your feet into. All these products are available from London Drugs.
- Plan to take a walk—either before work or at lunchtime. In a study comparing people who walked briskly for 30 minutes with those who simply “hung out,” the walkers all felt considerably better and more relaxed than those who didn’t walk. A shorter walk during a coffee break is also better than actually drinking coffee.
- Be organized. Knowing what you will be doing and when, helps you feel in control. So dig out that daytimer or download a time management program and make sure you use it.
- If you constantly feel overworked and/or cannot seem to get your work finished, set up a meeting to discuss the issue with your immediate superior. Try to provide a possible solution. Even though you may not see any action, you will have openly discussed your concerns, and made those who count aware of the pressures you are encountering.
