Depending on what type of clinic you attend, you will find that a number of useful health-related procedures are included, such as a personalized risk assessment for bone fracture, diabetes screening, cholesterol screening, and photography to assess how sun exposure or smoking may have affected your skin. Our pharmacists will provide answers to your questions, and you will usually receive an information package to take home with you. (A nominal fee applies to most clinics.)
What Types of Clinics are there?
London Drugs schedules health clinics throughout the year. Here’s a profile of our planned clinics, and what you can expect if you attend:
Heart Health Clinics
Heart attacks and stroke remain the number one killer of Canadians. During the clinic, our heart health computer program will help assess your risk of developing heart disease. Based on your personal heart-health profile, the pharmacist can help you develop a lifestyle plan to reduce your risk factors.
Smoking Cessation Clinics
Each year, more than 45,000 Canadians die from tobacco use while hundreds of thousands suffer from smoking-related diseases including heart disease, bronchitis, emphysema and cancers of the lung, mouth and voice box.
During your private consultation, a pharmacist will help you to assess your smoking profile and formulate a personalized plan for quitting; help you identify your smoking triggers and to develop strategies for overcoming them, and provide information on the health risks of smoking and the benefits of quitting.
Osteoporosis Clinics
Osteoporosis is a debilitating disease that can greatly compromise the quality of life. Bones weakened by the condition can cause disfigurement, loss of height, reduction of mobility, fractures and pain - leading to increased dependence on others.
Attending an osteoporosis screening clinic will help you determine if you are a likely candidate for the disease. During your private consultation, you will be given a personal risk assessment for bone fracture, and will receive an information package to help you prevent or arrest the condition.
Living with Diabetes Clinics
Three different clinics to help determine your risk factors for diabetes, or to help you manage diabetes (if you have the condition), are scheduled for 2007.
- Living with Diabetes Clinic No.1, Know Your Targets. (Screening for diabetes, elevated blood pressure, and excess weight.) You may have diabetes and not be aware of it. Our pharmacists will check for the warning signs and refer you to your doctor, if necessary.
- Living with Diabetes Clinic No. 2, Your Treatment, Your Plan. (A1C and medication review for people diagnosed with diabetes.) An A1C (also known as glycated hemoglobin) test gives you a picture of your average blood glucose readings for the past three months. The results give you insight into how well your diabetes treatment plan is working.
- Living with Diabetes Clinic No. 3, Don’t Complicate Things. (Foot neuropathy screening targeted to people diagnosed with diabetes.)
Sun Awareness Clinics
These clinics allow you to see for yourself how the sun may have affected your skin, with our special photography. You will also learn how to protect your skin against wrinkling and cancerous lesions.
Flu Vaccination Clinics Health specialists agree that the best way to protect yourself and your family against influenza is to have a flu vaccination. Our popular Flu Vaccination Clinics book up quickly, so be sure to watch out for them.
