You may be surprised to learn that your health and dental coverage provides fewer benefits than you think. Many people assume that they are covered sufficiently under their provincial health plan and are surprised to find out that their insurance either does not cover them for certain services, or provides limited coverage.
Let's take a look at two examples. June has injured her back while pulling weeds in the garden. Her back remains stiff and uncomfortable following a week's rest and her doctor has suggested she visit a massage therapist. June learns that a single half-hour session with a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) costs $30, and that she will need therapy at least once a week. That isn't too bad, she tells herself, most of it will be covered by my health plan anyway.
June books her first appointment and is surprised to find out that her provincial health insurance plan does not cover services provided by a RMT. Frustrated, she pays anyway and is pleased that her back responds well to the treatment. Now what does she do? She can't afford the minimum $120 a month for treatment, and yet with work and family to be attended to, can she truly afford not to have the treatment?
Twelve year old Sean is playing street hockey with his friends when he is struck in the face with a stick. Unfortunately, he loses a tooth and another is threatened if he doesn't immediately have the proper treatment. Sean's dad, Jack, rushes him to the emergency dentist, where he is quickly treated. Thank goodness for our dental coverage, thinks Jack, on learning that the cost of treatment amounts to $850. Imagine Jack's surprise when, a month or so after submission of the dental bills, he learns that coverage for his son's emergency dental treatment has been declined and the fees he paid to the dentist will not be reimbursed.
Dental treatments, many prescription drugs, alternative therapies offered by naturopaths, chiropractors, RMTs, etc; semi-private room coverage in hospital, and vision benefits are important to your well being and that of your family. However, not all of these are covered by provincial insurance plans. To ensure that your health needs are covered, you might consider enhancing your provincial health plan with coverage from the London Drugs bettercare Health and Dental Program. This program helps fill in the gaps in coverage provided by your provincial health insurance plan.
