A blister is nature’s way of letting you know that your body’s tissues are being injured. The fluid-filled vesicle develops to protect the affected area from further damage. Blisters are often caused by ill-fitting footwear. They can be very painful, and should be dealt with promptly. The best way to treat a blister - or any skin wound - is to apply a moist dressing such as Advanced First Aid™ 2nd Skin® Blister Pads. This will allow the blister to heal properly, prevent scabbing, and protect the area from further damage. It is also important to apply an antibacterial ointment or cream to the blister prior to covering it, to help guard against infection.
Here are some tips on preventing blisters:
- Break footwear in around the house and garden before wearing for long walks or hikes.
- Wear proper socks. A number of socks that provide sport-specific padding are available in the marketplace.
- Protect hot spots. If you are prone to blisters in a certain area, be sure to cover the area with moleskin, or an Advanced First Aid™ 2nd Skin® Blister Pad.
Please note, if you have diabetes, or a compromised immune system, and you develop a blister or other skin wound, you should seek prompt medical attention.
