Crystal meth is even more addictive than heroin and cocaine. Since it is less expensive, produces a longer high and possesses aphrodisiac qualities, it has become a frequent ingredient in most party and rave drugs, including ecstasy.
Due to the growing use of crystal meth, the situation is fast becoming a community problem as well as one of law enforcement.
In recognition of the growing concern over crystal meth use, London Drugs has taken the initiative to review larger-than-normal sales of products containing pseudoephedrine. When an unusually high number of such products are presented at the checkout, a pharmacist will attend to help the customer determine if the product is appropriate to treat the condition for which it was purchased. Allergy medications, in particular, may be purchased over the long term and, occasionally, a customer may find it convenient to buy several packages at a time.
"In assisting with higher volume sales of these products, we hope to ensure that the medication being purchased will best benefit the customer,” says London Drugs General Manager of Pharmacy, John Tse. "In some cases, the pharmacist might suggest an alternative product for the customer’s specific health concern."
Nonetheless, London Drugs pharmacists expect that assisting with higher volume pseudoephedrine sales in this manner will help prevent potentially inappropriate and/or dangerous use of products containing this drug.
The Risks
- Crystal meth use is associated with numerous serious physical effects including rapid heart rate and increased blood pressure. Damage to the small blood vessels in the brain can lead to stroke. Chronic use of the drug can result in inflammation of the heart lining. Overdoses can cause convulsions and death.
- People who use crystal meth may also have episodes of violent behavior, paranoia, confusion, anxiety and insomnia. The drug can produce psychotic symptoms that persist for months or years after an individual has stopped using the drug.
