Goodbye Dry Eye
Goodbye Dry Eye

If you constantly feel like you have a piece of grit in your eye, or your eyes simply feel scratchy and uncomfortable, you likely have dry eye. This uncomfortable condition is very common, and becomes particularly so as we grow older and tear production is reduced.

Dry eye is a disorder of the tear film that covers the eye and prevents discomfort when blinking. When insufficient tears are produced, or the composition of the film is incorrect allowing rapid evaporation, the covering of the eye (conjunctiva) and the cornea become dry and uncomfortable.

Although dry eye is usually a persistent condition, it may also be transient, caused for example, by environmental conditions.

Causes of dry eye

A number of factors contribute towards the development of dry eye. These include :
- Aging and associated tear reduction. (Post menopausal women are particularly susceptible due to hormonal changes that affect the production of tears.)
- Environmental factors such as sun, wind, smoke; dry climate;
high altitude; air conditioning; prolonged computer work or other
tasks that cause eye strain. These activities decrease the rate at
which we blink, encouraging dryness.

- Medications including diuretics, beta-blockers, antihistamines, antidepressants, antianxiety agents and oral contraceptives.

- Health conditions including allergies, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, eye infections, lupus and blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelid).

GenTeal® Gel Drops and Lubricant Eye Gel help keep the eyes moisturized and comfortable. GenTeal® Gel Drops contain a balance of essential electrolytes that helps restore the natural salt balance of the tears. This formulation contains the preservative GenAqua® — which breaks down completely into water and oxygen within one minute of contacting the surface of the eye. (This is significant as the preservatives generally used in artificial tear solutions have been linked to toxicity of the cornea.)

The GenTeal® range of eye lubricants also includes GenTeal® Artificial Tears for mild dry eye (occasional discomfort), and GenTeal® Gel for severe dry eye (advanced, ongoing discomfort).

Please speak with your London Drugs pharmacist if you have questions as to which GenTeal® formulation is best for your specific needs.
