Most colds come and go with little more than annoying symptoms. However, you should see your doctor

• if your temperature rises above 38.5 degrees C (101 degrees F) or if you have a fever over 37.5 C (100 degrees F) for more than three days.

Landmark Study in Cold Prevention

In a recent double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 323 healthy adults from the general population (18-65 years of age) with a history of at least two upper respiratory infections (colds) in the previous year, were given either two capsules a day of Cold-fX® or a placebo (sugar pill) for a period of four months. The study was conducted during the winter of 2003/4, when cold germs were prevalent. Spearheading the trial were Edmonton's Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Gerry Predy, an associate professor at the University of Alberta, and internationally recognized Nutritional Biochemist, Dr. Tapan Basu, a University of Alberta professor.

The results showed a significant reduction (26 percent) in the average number and frequency of cold infections per person in the Cold-fX® group. Even more striking was the fact that recurrent infections were reduced by 56 percent. In other words, the participants who reported one cold infection had a likelihood of contracting additional infections that was less than one-half of those taking the placebo. Furthermore, the trial participants taking Cold-fX®, experienced a 45 percent reduction in the total number of “cold days” suffered per participant and a 31 percent reduction in the severity of their symptoms.

Cold-fX® may be used therapeutically to lessen symptoms of an existing cold, or preventively to boost the immune system.
