Keeping Your Resolutions

By mid-year, close to half of all New Year’s resolutions have been broken. Here are some tips on keeping your health resolutions on track:

  • Make them achievable. You are more likely to succeed if you plan on losing three pounds a month, than 40 pounds in six months.
  • Make a list of all the benefits you expect to achieve from keeping your resolutions. Read it daily.
  • Keep a journal. Note your falls from grace and how you plan to get back on track, as well as your successes. This way, you are less likely to give up if you slip up.
  • Ask for the support of friends and family members.
  • Cultivate relationships with people who understand your objectives. Join a support group and seek situations where you know you will not slip. (Don’t attend an “all you can eat” buffet, for example, if you plan on reducing your food intake, or hang out with friends who smoke if you are giving up the habit.)
  • Go to bed earlier. If you are tired, you will be more likely to give in to temptation. It is particularly important to get to bed early if getting more exercise is one of your resolutions.
  • Develop a reward system to acknowledge your achievements.
