Paper bleached with chlorine may contain dioxin and organochlorine residues that can cause irritation to the skin and nasal passages in sensitive people. The bleaching process itself produces organochlorines, which enter the environment in waste materials. These chemicals are extremely stable and persist in the environment for long periods of time, moving around the globe in air currents and in water. Scientists are concerned about their presence as they tend to accumulate in the fatty tissues of animals (including fish) and humans. Since humans are at the top of the food chain, we have the greatest risk of accumulating high concentrations of organochlorines. Organochlorines have been isolated in the breast milk, fatty tissue, breath and semen of Canadians and Americans.
Cascades* recycled paper towel roll and bathroom tissue are made from 100 percent recycled paper. This means that no additional trees are cut down for their manufacture. They are available in unbleached and bleached-without-chlorine. Cascades household papers are also manufactured with 80 percent less water than the industry average and dried with one of the cleanest burning combustibles - natural gas.
Cascades* recycled paper products, including non-chlorine bleached and unbleached towel roll and non-chlorine bleached bathroom tissue, are available from London Drugs.
