Colds are very common, especially in young children. It is not unusual for children in school or daycare to catch six to 10 colds a year. (An adult, by contrast, may catch two to four colds a year.)
Here are some ways to reduce your child’s risk of falling prey to cold germs.
- Teach him never to share drinking glasses or straws with friends.
- Eliminate exposure to cigarette smoke. The toxins from cigarette smoking enter a child's respiratory tract, making it harder for the child to fight off illness.
- Make sure your child’s diet is healthy. (See The ABCs of Good Nutrition) Foods that are fresh and natural help boost the immune system.
- Get her to bed on time. Making sure your child has enough sleep will help her immune system fight off viruses.
- Watch for signs of stress. Even young children can become stressed when their daily schedules are too full. Older children, who often spend too much time in front of the computer or TV, should be encouraged to get outside for a stress-reducing “fresh air” break.
