TORONTO, ON –August 15, 2008 – CSA International in cooperation with Greenway Home Products of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, and of Northwood, Ohio U.S.A., announces a voluntary recall of approximately 45,373 countertop water dispensers in Canada and an estimated 43,598 units in the U.S. that have the built-in hot water feature. The affected models were produced with a different, uncertified plastic base with openings contrary to the originals listed in the CSA Certification report. The new constructions have not been certified to the applicable standard by CSA International. This uncertified construction may lead to molten metal dripping on the surface beneath the units posing a potential smoke/fire hazard as well as a risk of electrical shock.

There have been no reports of injury. Two incidents of fire have been reported in Canada while no incidents have been reported to date in the USA.

This voluntary recall affects only the countertop water dispenser models GWD2630W, PWD2635W, VWD2636W, VWD2636BLK and VWD2636RED manufactured from June 2006 through November 2007 with the first four digits of the serial numbers starting with 0606 through 0711. Model numbers followed by a “-1” or “-2” and/or provided with a solid baseplate are not affected by the recall. The affected models bear a cCSAus certification mark with the file number 218326. The date of manufacture and serial number is located on the side of the countertop dispenser as shown in the attached photograph.

These countertop water dispensers were sold in 2007 in Canada primarily through Walmart Canada and Canadian Tire Corporation, and in the United States primarily by Walmart U.S.A., and Brandsmart at a an approximate retail price of $69 - $79.

Owners of the subject countertop water dispensers are advised to stop using them immediately and are to contact Greenway Home Products at www.greenwayhp.com or via telephone at 1-866-279-0088 between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday for a free replacement baseplate.
