You can help.
1. Talk to your family: many suitable organs are not used because the family members do not know their loved ones' wishes. If you make your wishes clear ahead of time, your family members will not have to grapple with the decision when they are in emotional turmoil.
2. Add your name to the registry: the majority of British Columbians agree with organ donation, yet only 16% are in the registry. You only have to register once-even if you move, we still have your decision on file.
You can pick up an Organ Donor registration form at any London Drugs in BC.
Alternatively, you can register in a few minutes on the BC Organ Donor Registry at http://www.transplant.bc.ca/.
Reasons to Register:
" There is far greater chance that you will one day need an organ transplant than there is of you ever being an organ donor.
" The survival rates of transplant patients continue to improve, providing recipients with a much greater quality of life.
" Transplants are cost effective. For those with kidney disease, the average cost of dialysis treatment is $50,000 a year. By comparison, the one-time cost of a kidney transplant in BC is approximately $20,000, with an additional yearly cost of about $6,000 for anti-rejection medications.
" Many donor families have told us that they were grateful that their loved one had registered to be an organ donor, saving them from making the decision at such a difficult time.
