London Drugs stores reduce garbage waste by 25%

London Drugs Recycling Programs

Recycling programs have reduced the company's garbage waste by at least 25 per cent ...

London Drugs comprehensive recycling programs have reduced the company's garbage waste by at least 25 per cent at its 68 stores across Western Canada.  Thanks to London Drugs customers and employees' commitment to recycling, and its partnership with Waste Management of Canada, the number of garbage trucks visiting London Drugs locations has dropped dramatically.

London Drugs customers are recycling packaging, Styrofoam, electric appliances and computers and electronics as part of London Drugs' comprehensive recycling program. And now, London Drugs stores have seen a dramatic reduction in the amount of garbage collected at their stores every week.  Stores in some markets are seeing a reduction in garbage pick ups of more than 60 per cent since implementing London Drugs' expanded recycling program which began in early 2006.

London Drugs customers bring in their old electric appliances and computer/electronic items that were originally purchased at London Drugs for recycling through its E-waste program. With partner Genesis Recycling, London Drugs recycles TVs, VCRs, cell phones, computers, monitors, kitchen and personal care appliances and other electronic equipment returned by customers when purchasing a new product, along with the packaging.

London Drugs continually audits its waste and recycling programs through its partnership with Waste Management of Canada. On average, each month London Drugs recycles:
" 50,000 pounds of e-waste filling two semi-trailers of electronic waste each week
" 8,377 pounds of plastic
" 765,000 pounds of cardboard
In 2007, London Drugs recycled 3,986 pounds of rechargeable batteries and cellphones through the Call2Recycle program with the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC).    Also in 2007, London Drugs received the Philips PEAK Award for its conscious use of environmentally friendly and sustainable lighting solutions.

"London Drugs is very excited with the results we've had since launching our comprehensive recycling program, said Clint Mahlman, senior vice president of London Drugs.  "We have recycled plastic and cardboard for decades. In 2006, the decision to include additional packaging materials and electronics in our recycling program has resulted in success - and we are not done yet.  Environmental responsibility is important for both customers and employees when choosing where they are going to shop or work. London Drugs is committed to supporting our customers' recycling needs by offering these programs and we will continue to seek  additional  innovative recycling opportunities."

"London Drugs' three-pillar strategy is to work with suppliers for more environmentally responsible products and package reduction, comprehensive recycling programs, and energy reduction management in its operations," said Mahlman.  "Our recycling program is just one of the pillars of success we are proud of."

As part of its ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility, London Drugs continues to provide their customers with innovative consumer choices. Energy saving lighting and electronics, biodegradable cleaning products, organic cosmetics and recycled paper are just some of the environmentally friendly products available at London Drugs.
