Richmond, BC (June 17, 2009) – In support of National Memory Screening Day, London Drugs Patient-Care pharmacists will be conducting free and confidential memory screening clinics. Members of the public who might have questions or concerns about their brain health can speak with a Patient-Care pharmacist on June 23rd. The London Drugs memory screening clinic is non-intimidating, and will allow individuals to ask questions and take a voluntary cognitive test.
“Memory Screening clinics are a useful tool in helping individuals learn about their brain health in a relaxed, educational environment,” said John Tse, vice president of pharmacy, London Drugs. “Individuals with memory concerns as well as Adults with a family history of Alzheimer’s disease should consider attending.”
Approximately 300,000 Canadians have Alzheimer’s and this number is expected to more than double by 2031.
“Our population is aging and with that comes an increased risk of memory issues,” said Taras Rohatyn, president, Alzheimer’s Foundation for Caregiving in Canada. “It is becoming more and more critical that Canadians feel comfortable talking about their memory problems – and it is vital that they act on them. While not all memory complaints are Alzheimer’s disease, the earlier an individual knows exactly what the problem is, the earlier he or she can be treated, plan for the future and embrace those social support and community programs that are already in place.”
The London Drugs Patient-Care pharmacist will conduct a face-to-face, non-invasive and confidential screening, which takes approximately five minutes and consists of a series of questions and tasks. The screening results do not represent a diagnosis. The pharmacist will then encourage individuals with below normal scores as well as those who still have concerns, to pursue a full medical exam.
John Tse, vice president, pharmacy, London Drugs, and Taras Rohatyn, president, Alzheimer’s Foundation for Caregiving in Canada are both available for interviews to further discuss National Memory Screening Day and the memory screening clinics.
Memory Screening Clinics will be held at London Drugs locations in Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby, Surrey, Nanaimo, Gibsons, Abbotsford, Kamloops, Kelowna, Edmonton, Calgary, Lethbridge, Saskatoon and Winnipeg.
