There are more than two million Canadians with diabetes. Without proper management and care of diabetes, a variety of complications can result. Patients that commit to diabetes management can lead active and independent lives. With an in-store Certified Diabetes Educator, London Drugs pharmacy patients have access to a health care professional that the patient can work with regularly to manage their disease. Certified Diabetes Educators take an active role in patients’ health care and understand the most effective ways to teach patients about diabetes. Select pharmacists undergo an eight month internal program that prepares them for Canadian Diabetes Association Certified Diabetes Educators exam. London Drugs now has Certified Diabetes Educators in Winnipeg (Manitoba), Saskatoon, Regina (Saskatchewan), Calgary, St. Albert, Lethbridge (Alberta), Vancouver, Coquitlam, Surrey, Richmond, Gibsons and Kamloops (British Columbia).
Jean Blake, Executive Director, Pacific Area, Canadian Diabetes Association, “applauds London Drugs for recognizing the importance of diabetes expertise within their pharmacist team, and for taking the steps to support this aspect of their professional development."
Diabetes continues to be one of Canada’s leading illnesses that affect a wide range of people. It is recommended that anyone over the age of 40 years be tested for Type 2 Diabetes at least every three years. Other risk factors for Type 2 Diabetes include a family member with diabetes or being of Aboriginal, Asian, South Asian or African descent. Diabetes management continues to have positive outcomes through pharmacist care that incorporates patient education and management of treatment regimes for patients.
