London Drugs is helping parents and children understand asthma with a new clinic and certified asthma educators.
London Drugs continues its commitment to health and wellness with the arrival of a new patient care clinic developed for school aged children and their parents with asthma. Asthma is a chronic lung condition that affects breathing and is becoming more common each year in children. There’s no cure for asthma but with an effective management plan asthma sufferers can lead active lives with fewer symptoms. The London Drugs Asthma Clinic helps parents and children to better understand asthma. “As the parent of a child with asthma, you need to take an active role in keeping your child’s asthma under control,” advises the Asthma Society of Canada.
People with asthma have lungs that are more sensitive than the average person. For the treatment of asthma there are three main things to consider; avoid triggers, use preventer medications and use reliever medications. Allergens can trigger an asthma attack and include pollen, dust mites, animal hair and dander, mould and environment. Exercise and stress can also be triggers for an asthma attack. Preventer and reliever medications assist with long term care of asthma and during an asthma attack. Medications are taken orally or with an inhaler to get the right amount into your lungs. Asthma inhalers need to be used properly and take practice when first using them. At the London Drugs Asthma Clinic the Patient Care Pharmacist will take families through a 30 minute private consultation to discuss triggers for asthma, how allergies affect asthma, develop an asthma action plan and review medications and inhaler technique. At the clinic, patients can also measure how well their asthma is currently controlled with a spirometer and use an In-check dial to ensure they have enough breath strength to draw in all their medications. Patients taking part in the clinic will receive an asthma journal and Asthma, Allergies and You patient care plan. In addition to the Asthma Clinic, there is now a Certified Asthma Educator at the London Drugs in Langley, BC, Calgary, AB, and Saskatoon, SK.
