Helping Kids Back to School Allergies Asthma and Germs

London Drugs Helping Kids Back to School
Allergies, Asthma & Germs

RICHMOND, BC, August 25, 2008 – As thousands of children start school this fall parents will need to take extra precautions for their child’s health and safety. The increase in physical contact at schools will raise the likelihood of germs being spread around the classroom and the close proximity of where students share lunches could result in a food allergy reaction. To assist with health care planning, London Drugs Patient Care Pharmacists are presenting two programs for young students across Western Canada. Patient Care Pharmacists will be going into classrooms with the Operation WASHUP and AllerGWhiz programs.

Operation WASHUP teaches students proper hand washing techniques to prevent the spread of disease caused by germs. Through an interactive workshop the Patient Care Pharmacist highlights how germs are spread through physical contact with a special gel substance and ultraviolet light. The UV light shows the child areas they have missed when they did not follow the proper six steps of WASHUP. Operation WASHUP is ideal for children aged six to eight years old.AllerGWhiz explains food allergies, the importance of not sharing lunches, the signs of an allergic reaction and what to do during one. The Patient Care Pharmacist leads an interactive workshop where students are encouraged to share their knowledge of and experiences with allergies. The program includes an Epipen® Simulator that shows students how to use an auto-injector to administer epinephrine should their classmate experience a reaction. With a special DVD students will learn the serious nature of allergies and help them avoid allergic reactions in themselves and their friends. AllerGWhiz is suitable for children aged eight to ten years old. The Operation WASHUP and AllerGWhiz program are sponsored by London Drugs and available to schools at no charge. School representatives can contact their nearest London Drugs and arrange a workshop with the London Drugs Patient Care Pharmacist. Parents who want to be further involved with their child’s health management may also consider the London Drugs Asthma Clinic offered at stores across Western Canada. The Asthma Clinic also touches on allergies and how they can affect asthma. During the clinic the Patient Care Pharmacists reviews the patient’s current asthma medication, assesses inhaler technique and discusses an asthma action plan. This program is offered from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. making it ideal for children and parents to attend together. London Drugs Pharmacists undergo extensive in-house training and are provided with continual industry updates and education so that customers receive the most up-to-date treatments and care. London Drugs is committed to health and wellness through its patient focused care with patient care clinics. Clinics offered through the year provide customers with one-on-one personal care and consultation with a London Drugs Patient Care Pharmacist. In the photo: London Drugs patient care pharmacist, Pindy J., teaches students about hand washing and food allergies.FOR PHOTOS AND VIDEO BROLL PLEASE CONTACT CYNNAMON SCHREINERT.
