CALGARY, AB – Faced with very strong increases in demand, the Calgary Food Bank needs your help. On Saturday, April 18th, donate canned and non-perishable food items at any London Drugs store during Food For Thought. London Drugs will have a truck at every store between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. with a goal to fill each truck in order to help feed as many Calgarians as possible. In February 2009, 43% more people came to the Calgary Food Bank than in February 2008. In 2008 ato 90,000 people received Emergency Food Hampers. 

The Calgary Food Bank distributes items that are nutritionally balanced against Canada’s Food Guide. The Calgary Food Bank has a need for Juice (1 litre), Baby Formula with Iron, Pasta, Pasta Sauce, Canned Tomatoes, Peanut Butter, Canned Beans in Tomato Sauce, Cereal, Canned and Dry Soup, Baby Food (jars), Canned Fish, Macaroni and Cheese, Canned Vegetables, Rice, Canned Meat, and Canned Fruit. In addition to non-perishable food items the Calgary Food Bank also accepts monetary donations, and every $1 donated enables the Calgary Food Bank to distribute more than $4 worth of food to those in need. Volunteers from the Calgary Food Bank will be available to give charitable tax receipts upon request during Food for Thought.

ABOUT CALGARY FOOD BANK

The Calgary Food Bank is dedicated to gathering and distributing quality emergency food for those in need. Individuals and families in crisis receive approximately one week of quality food (up to a maximum of six times per year). Over 200 emergency food hampers are distributed every day. Last year, 89,586 people received Emergency Food Hampers, 43% more people came to the Food Bank in February 2009 than in February 2008 and more than 3,800 volunteers gave 75,765 hours of their time to help feed the hungry.
